It's been done! I've made the sushi I have planned and researched for the last six or so weeks. There were two inquiry questions I needed to make the sushi in order to answer. They were:
6. Will my sushi taste better than at least the cheap sushi places?
The answer is an equivocal yes. That is to say, yes it was tasty by the end when I got the hang of everything. And yes, it probably exceeds the quality of the cheap sushi places. But I do not think it's as good as some of the nicer sushi places I've been. Gen Kai, in Dana Point, is probably my favorite sushi place. Was it as good as their sushi? Not even close. But the quality matched or exceeded the cheap sushi places, so I succeeded in that regard. Long story short, make your sushi if you were only planning on buying cheap stuff. But go out if you want really tasty sushi.
10. Will other people want to eat my sushi? Meaning, will they be both visually appealing and tasty?
As you can see in the above pictures, they were sometimes visually appealing! The first one was terrible looking. It looked disheveled (rarely a word I use for sushi). But by the end, the one right below it, looks appealing. It looks like a trained person may have made it.
As for the "will other people want to eat my sushi?" I decided to have everyone anonymously vote on a scale of 1-10. I received three 7s and one 8. I was happy and it seemed to reflect my opinion as well (i.e., better than average or what was expected). I thanked my friends (who may've been biased) for their approval.
