The students I teach have been widely varied. I often see myself in the ones that are inquisitive, happy, and participate in class. Other times, I don't see much of myself in the students. These students tend to be quieter and don't enjoy school as much. Since I was an avid learner in school, I will probably expect the same of my students. It will be easy for me to support students who are good note takers and learn well from lectures, which was more my learning style. On the other hand, I will have a hard time finding ways to engage kinesthetic learners, which does not come first-hand to me. I will have to make a real effort to be creative to work with these learners. I hope to avoid constantly perpetuating my own learning style by using colleagues as resources and looking for their suggestions. I want to use them to provide ideas about how they learn that I may use for my classroom. My talents and interests are in the outdoors. I like to hike, run and bike. I hope to use these in class to relate to students and build relationships with them.
Students that benefit from my past are the ones whom I can see myself as a student in. The students that benefit in my class are the ones that come to class happy and wanting to learn. The ones that don't benefit as much are ones that don't care about school and do not want to be in class to learn. In order to meet the needs of all of my students, I like to present information through a variety of ways. I lecture, but I also place students in groups so that they may learn from peers. I also encourage debate among students in the class in order to develop their critical thinking skills. I strive to provide every student an opportunity to learn the information and a variety of formats.
